What is the difference between a garter belt and hold-ups?

Hold-ups (also called stay-ups) have a silicone band at the top that grips the thigh without any external support. A garter belt is a separate waist piece with suspender clips that attach to the stocking tops. Hold-ups are more convenient for occasional wear, but garter belt stockings stay more securely in place over a long evening and don't leave a silicone mark on the skin. If you're wearing stockings for more than a couple of hours, the belt-and-stocking combination is more reliable.

How do I attach stockings to a garter belt?

Open the suspender clip by pressing the button or tab on the front. Fold the stocking top over the clip's rubber nub, then close the clasp so the stocking fabric is sandwiched between the nub and the metal bar. Give it a gentle tug to confirm it's locked. Attach the front clips first, then the back, then adjust the strap length so the stocking sits taut but not stretched. If the stocking keeps slipping, the clip mechanism may be worn, replacement clips are widely available and easy to sew on.

Can lingerie garters be worn under everyday clothing?

Yes, and many people do. A thin satin or mesh garter belt sits flat enough under trousers or a skirt that it's not visible. The clips create a small bump under very tight-fitting fabric, so fitted pencil skirts may show a slight outline. Under looser cuts, a garter belt is completely invisible. The practical benefit is that stockings stay up more reliably than hold-ups during an active day.

What size garter belt do I need?

Garter belts size by waist or hip measurement depending on where the piece is designed to sit. A waist-sitting belt uses your natural waist measurement; a hip-sitting style uses your hip measurement. Check the size chart on the specific product, sizing varies between brands. If you're between sizes, go up. Most belts have multiple hook-and-eye positions so there's some adjustment room, but a belt that's too small has no give at all.

Are garters and garter belts the same thing?

Not exactly. A garter (in the traditional sense) is a band worn around the thigh or leg to hold a stocking up on its own, no belt involved. A garter belt is the waist piece with suspender straps. In everyday usage, "garters" is often used loosely to mean the whole suspender belt setup, which is why searches for sexy garters and garter belts tend to return the same products. For clarity: if you want the waist piece with clips, you're looking for a garter belt or suspender belt.
