The fabric makes a bigger difference than most people expect. Wetlook PVC-style panels, like those on the Basque with wetlook stripes, give a high-contrast, almost latex-adjacent look without the heat or maintenance of real latex. Lace is softer and more forgiving on fit, which is why it shows up on so many bodies and catsuits. Fishnet sits somewhere in between: structured enough to hold a shape, open enough to feel light.

Sizing is where people most often go wrong with basques specifically. Because they're boned or semi-structured, they don't stretch the way a regular bra does. Go by your underbust measurement first, not your dress size. Most pieces in this category run true to size, but if you're between sizes, size up, a basque that's too tight across the ribs is genuinely uncomfortable after twenty minutes.

For bodies and teddies, stretch fabric is more forgiving, but pay attention to the torso length. A body that's too short will pull at the crotch snap; too long and it bunches. If you're taller than average, look for pieces described as "one size" with a high stretch percentage, they tend to accommodate longer torsos better than sized pieces.

The range here goes well beyond basic black lace. Delicate lingerie doesn't survive a regular machine wash cycle. Lace snags, boning warps, and elastics lose their stretch fast if you're not careful. Hand wash in cool water with a gentle detergent, or use a mesh laundry bag on a delicate cycle at 30°C maximum. Never wring out lace or fishnet, press the water out gently and lay flat to dry.

Store boned basques flat or hanging, never folded at the waist. The boning will hold its shape much longer that way. For bodies and teddies, folding is fine as long as you're not crushing any decorative hardware like rings or chains.

One thing most people don't think about: body lotion and fake tan are the enemies of light-coloured lace. Apply any body products and let them fully absorb before putting on white or nude lingerie. It saves a lot of frustration.
