Handle length and grip matter more than most product descriptions let on. A short, rigid handle gives you precision. A longer, more flexible one lets you build momentum and vary the intensity without repositioning. If you're buying a flogger specifically, count the tails and check their width, more tails spread the impact, fewer tails concentrate it.

Floggers are probably the most versatile entry point. The falls (the hanging strips) can be made from leather, suede, rubber, or even rope, and each material changes the sensation significantly. Suede floggers are often recommended for beginners because they're forgiving, the impact is diffuse and relatively gentle even with a firm swing.

Crops are a different animal. They're rigid, precise, and the small leather flap at the tip concentrates impact into a very small area. That makes them excellent for targeted sensation play but less suitable if you want broad coverage.
